한옥커즈 회원들은 10월 한 달 동안 안산을 두 차례 방문했습니다. 10월 4일 저녁, 안산에 기반을 둔 와이즈 위민 협회(Wise Women Association, 이하 WWA)가 창립 5주년을 맞아 성대한 축하 파티를 열었고, 한옥커즈의 세 명의 멤버가 초청되어 함께했습니다. 뷔페 디너와 함께 진행된 이번 행사는 WWA의 든든한 지지자들과 서아프리카 출신 난민 여성들이 함께 모인 자리로, 이들은 농업, 예술, 요식업 등 다양한 영역에서 서로를 돕고 자립을 도모하며 견고한 공동체를 만들어가고 있습니다.

며칠 뒤, 올해 추석 연휴였던 10월 7일에는 한옥커즈가 다시 한 번 안산을 찾아, WWA의 커뮤니티 농장에서 열린 ‘추수의 날(Harvest Day)’에 함께했습니다. 비가 오는 아침이었음에도 불구하고, 한옥커즈 멤버 14명과 몇몇 난민 친구들, 커뮤니티 구성원들이 모여 고구마순과 로젤(히비스커스의 한 종류)을 수확하며 즐거운 시간을 보냈습니다. WWA의 농업 소그룹인 ‘로나 포 오부카(Lona Po Obuka, “수확의 땅”이라는 뜻)’는 이날 수확한 작물을 참여자 모두와 나누었고, 예상보다 훨씬 넉넉하게 나누어 주었습니다. 이후 모두 함께 점심을 나누고, 사진도 아주 많이 찍으며 따뜻한 연대와 환대의 시간을 보냈습니다.

Our members have visited Ansan city twice in October. In the evening of October 4th, the Ansan-based Wise Women Association celebrated its 5th anniversary by throwing a fantastic party for guests, including three Hanokers members who had attended. The event, which included a buffet dinner party, was a get-together of their supporters and hardworking refugee ladies from West Africa who organized themselves strongly to support each other, engaging in endeavors such as farming, the arts, and the culinary business.   

On a separate occasion, on the Chuseok holidays of this year, Hanokers delightedly joined the Wise Women’s Association at their community farm in Ansan City on October 7th. Despite a rainy morning, 14 Hanokers members and some fellow refugees and community friends joined the harvest day. A diverse and collegial group of people spent the morning harvesting sweet potato leaves and roselles (a kind of hibiscus). Wise Women – or more specially ‘Lona Po Obuka’ (their farming sub-group, meaning ‘Land to Harvest’) – graciously shared the harvest plants with all participants (definitely way more than they worked for)! We also shared lunch and took way too many pictures.

10월 15일, 한옥커즈는 시민활동가들과 함께 오프라인 모임을 가졌습니다. 이번 만남은 지난 오리엔테이션에 이어 새로 합류한 멤버들과 기존 활동가들이 한자리에 모여 서로를 소개하고, 앞으로의 협력 방향을 구체적으로 논의하는 자리였는데요. 코난과 베레켓이 직접 준비한 에티오피아식 ‘시로(shiro)’를 비롯한 비건 음식을 함께 나누며, 멤버들은 각자의 관심 분야와 활동 배경, 인권에 대한 생각을 자유롭게 나누었습니다. 서로의 경험과 역량을 연결할 수 있는 다양한 가능성을 모색하며, 향후 활동에 대한 기대감을 높였습니다.

On October 15, Hanokers held an offline gathering with community advocates. Building on the previous orientation, this meeting brought together new members and existing advocates to introduce themselves and discuss concrete directions for future collaboration. Over a shared vegan meal — including shiro, an Ethiopian dish prepared by Conan and Bereket — participants exchanged stories about their areas of interest, activist backgrounds, and perspectives on human rights. They explored ways to connect their experiences and strengths, fostering anticipation and shared enthusiasm for upcoming activities.

“한옥커즈와의 첫 만남은 맛있는 새로운 음식과 의미 있는 인연의 시작이 어우러진 정말 멋진 시간이었습니다. 인권과 옹호 활동에 깊은 관심을 가진 사람으로서, 한옥커즈의 커뮤니티 옹호 프로그램은 꼭 함께하고 싶다는 강한 끌림을 느끼게 했습니다. 단순한 자기소개를 넘어, 우리는 각자의 과거와 열정, 그리고 이야기에 대해 나누었습니다. 다른 이들의 동기를 들으며 제 자신의 여정을 돌아보는 과정에서, ‘스토리텔링’이 왜 한옥커즈의 난민 역량 강화라는 미션에 핵심적인지 깨달을 수 있었습니다.

이러한 이야기들은 공동체를 초대하고, 상처를 치유하며, 행동을 불러일으킵니다. 집에서 구운 빵과 따뜻한 음식이 놓인 식탁 위에서, 우리의 역량이 이 사명 속에서 어떻게 어우러질 수 있을지 자연스럽게 아이디어가 흘러나왔습니다. 한옥커즈가 현재 어떤 방식으로 옹호 활동을 펼치고 있는지, 또 앞으로의 흥미로운 계획들을 들으며 큰 영감을 받았습니다. 식탁을 정리할 무렵에는 이 프로그램이 제게 꼭 맞는 자리라는 확신이 들었습니다. 사람들에게 자신의 이야기와 문화, 그리고 인간다움을 나눌 수 있는 행사들을 함께 알리고 참여할 수 있게 되어 정말 기쁩니다.”

Reflection from Chantel🎀, one of the new community advocates:

My first meeting with Hanokers was a wonderful combination of delicious new food and the beginnings of meaningful connections. As someone deeply interested in human rights and advocacy, the organization’s community advocacy program felt like an exciting calling I had to be a part of. Beyond simple introductions, we learned about each member’s past, passions, and story. Exploring my own journey while listening to the motivations of others, I realized why storytelling is so intrinsic to Hanokers’ mission of refugee empowerment.

These stories invite community, heal wounds, and inspire action. Over homemade bread and warm dishes, ideas about where our skills best fit into this mission naturally began to flow. I was inspired to hear about all the ways Hanokers is currently pursuing its advocacy, along with the exciting plans to come. By the time we cleared the table, I knew this program would be an excellent fit for me. I’m thrilled about the opportunity to promote and engage with events that allow people to share their stories, their culture, and their humanity with others.

“우리는 모두 팔레스타인이다!” / “휴전을 넘어, 팔레스타인에 자유를!” / “팔레스타인의 미래는 팔레스타인이 결정한다!”

수백 명의 사람들이 함께 외쳤습니다. 10월 18일 오후, 서울 종각에서 열린 집회에는 여러 시민단체와 세계 각국의 시민들이 모여, 가자지구에서 벌어지고 있는 학살에 맞서 증언하고 목소리를 함께 높였습니다. 집회는 광화문을 향한 행진으로 이어졌고, 시간이 흐를수록 그 행렬은 더욱 커지고 목소리도 더욱 힘차게 울려 퍼졌습니다.

“We are all Palestine!” / “Beyond truce, freedom for Palestine!” / “Palestine will decide Palestine’s future!”

Thus spoke up hundreds of people of all backgrounds, in unison. On October 18, in the Jonggak square in Central Seoul, many activist groups and citizens of the world gathered to share testimony and raise their voices together, to speak against the genocide in Gaza. As the rally continued into a march toward Gwanghwamun, the crowd and the voices grew larger.

*This column is not to single out any one agency. It questions what has become of the idea of “protection” for refugees and what is lost when we continue to expect large institutions to resolve a crisis, in which the same institutions are politically entangled. While I am a board member of Hanokers, the opinions here are my own and do not reflect the organization’s stance.

두 달 전, 난민이 직접 주도하는 한 단체의 게시물을 본 적이 있습니다.

“우리는 난민으로서 절대 해서는 안 된다고 여겨졌던 일을 했다. 바로 우리를 ‘구원자’라 부르는 인도주의 기관을 실명으로 비판하는 책을 쓴 것이다. 수년간 그들은 우리에 대해 썼다. 보고서, 통계, 프로젝트로. 이제 우리가 그들에 대해 썼다 — UNHCR, IOM, 그리고 EU에 대해. 그리고 그 책의 이름을 『수치의 책(Book of Shame)』이라 붙였다.”

이 짧은 글은 분노와 논쟁적인 사실로 겹겹이 쌓여 있지만, 중동 지역 난민들이 마주하는 현실과, ‘위기’라는 납작한 이미지 너머의 진실을 스스로 말하고자 하는 결연한 의지를 보여줍니다.

"We did what refugees are never supposed to do: we wrote a book that names and criticizes the humanitarian agency that is meant to be our 'savior.' For years, they wrote about us: reports, statistics, projects. Now we have written about them - about UNHCR, IOM, and the EU. And we called it the Book of Shame."

This short text, layered with frustration and contested facts, captures the reality of refugees in the Levant and their determination to tell the truth beyond the flattened, exhausted images of the “crisis.”
