This event brought together more than 25 participants. Wanting her message to also reach those who could not be there, “Annie” wrote a letter addressed to Korean society as a whole. 9월 17일, 25년 하반기에 함께 활동할 시민활동가들과 함께 한옥커즈 오리엔테이션을 진행했습니다. 반갑게 인사를 나눈 후, 한옥커즈가 어떤 활동을 해왔는지 소개하고 앞으로 함께할 행사와 프로젝트 계획도 상세히 공유했어요.

기존 멤버 매튜(한결)와, 새롭게 팀에 합류한 Chantel, Dharshwana, 석환, 민조의 시선과 에너지가 앞으로의 한옥커즈 활동에 어떤 변화를 불어넣을지 벌써부터 기대가 큽니다. 진심으로 환영합니다! 🙌✨

On September 17, we held the Hanokers orientation with the citizen activists who will be working with us in the second half of 2025. After a warm round of introductions, we shared an overview of Hanokers’ past activities and talked in detail about upcoming events and project plans.

We are excited to see how the perspectives and energy of our members—Matthew (Hangyul), and the new team members Chantel, Dharshwana, Seokhwan, and Minjo—will bring fresh change to Hanokers’ work. A big, heartfelt welcome to all of you! 🙌✨

9월, 서울의 대표적인 문화 행사 중 하나인 서울 아프리카 페스티벌이 동대문디자인플라자(DDP)에서 8번째로 열렸습니다. 9월 12일부터 13일까지 이틀간 진행된 이번 축제에는 수천 명의 아프리카인, 한국인, 그리고 국제 관람객이 함께했습니다. 패션쇼, 아프로팝 댄스 공연, 다채로운 아프리카 음식과 문화 체험으로 꾸려진 이 축제는 수년간 아프리카 문화, 국가, 사람들을 알리는 장으로 자리 잡았습니다.

이번 축제에는 한옥커즈의 도르카스, 보나, 베레켓이 함께했습니다. 그중 보나(전 한옥커즈 커뮤니티 코디네이터)는 아래와 같은 소감을 전했습니다.

“9월 13일 토요일, DDP에서 열린 서울 아프리카 페스티벌에 다녀왔습니다. 이번이 다섯 번째 참여였지만, 이번에는 친구들과 함께 즐기기 위해 방문했어요. 그동안은 아프리카학을 전공하면서 늘 부스 운영을 도왔는데, 이번에는 단순히 관람객으로 참여하니 전혀 다른 경험이었어요.”

이 성공적인 축제의 배경에는 2013년 설립된 한국 기반 NGO '아프리카인사이트(Africa Insight)'가 있습니다. 설립 초기에는 미디어, 교육, 옹호 활동 등 다양한 시도를 이어갔으며, 아프리카인이 전체 인구의 0.04%에 불과하고 그중 많은 이들이 난민인 한국 사회에서 제한된 자원으로 활동을 펼쳐왔습니다.

In September, one of Seoul’s biggest cultural events, the Seoul Africa Festival, marked its 8th edition at the iconic Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP). Held on September 12–13, the festival attracted thousands of Africans, Koreans, and international visitors. Over the years, this vibrant celebration has become a platform to promote African cultures, countries, and people, showcasing fashion shows, Afro-pop dance performances, delicious African cuisines, and cultural experiences.

Hanokers members Dorcas, Bona, and Bereket joined this year’s festivities. Among them, Bona Yun, former Hanokers Community Coordinator, shared her heartwarming reflections on the experience.

“On Saturday, September 13th, I went to the Seoul Africa Festival at DDP. It was my fifth time attending, but this time I visited the festival to enjoy myself with my friends. In the past, I always helped run a booth as an African Studies major, so this time felt completely different—just showing up as a visitor rather than as a participant.”

Behind this successful festival stands Africa Insight, a Korean-based NGO founded in 2013. In its early years, the group experimented across media, education, and advocacy, working with modest resources in a country where the African population accounts for just 0.04%, which includes many African refugees.

보나는 이번 축제에서 새롭게 눈에 띈 점을 발견했습니다. 바로 아프리카 음식을 판매하거나 수공예품을 전시하는 부스였는데, 이는 남아프리카에서 보냈던 시간을 떠올리게 했다고 합니다.

“정말 따뜻하고 신선한 경험이었어요. 이 축제가 앞으로도 계속 다리 역할을 하며, 고정관념을 허물고 더 많은 한국인들이 두려움이나 망설임이 아닌 열린 마음과 호기심으로 다양성을 받아들이는 계기가 되길 진심으로 바랍니다.”

아프리카인사이트가 기획·주최한 이 축제는 이제 한국에서 문화 교류와 다양성의 상징이 되었습니다. 한국에 거주하는 아프리카인과 아프리카 문화를 사랑하는 한국인들이 서로 만나고, 나누고, 함께 즐길 수 있는 공간이자, 아프리카 대륙의 음악과 색채, 에너지가 어우러지는 축제의 장이 되었습니다.

Bona noticed that this year's festival introduced something new: booths selling African food and handmade items, which brought back warm memories of Bona’s time in South Africa.

“It was such a warm and refreshing experience. I truly hope this festival continues to act as a bridge, breaking down stereotypes and inspiring more people in Korea to embrace diversity with open hearts and curiosity, rather than fear or hesitation.”

Founded and organized by Africa Insight, the festival has become a symbol of cultural exchange and diversity in Korea. It is a space where Africans living in Korea and Koreans who love African culture can connect, share, and celebrate. Music from across the continent filled the air, while people proudly represented their heritage with joy, color, and energy.
