지난 3월 29일, 한옥커즈 회원들과 친구들, 그리고 지지자들이 서울 해방촌의 책방 풀무질에 모여 함께 걸어온 지난 3년의 여정을 기념하는 모임을 가졌습니다. 따뜻하고 포근한 분위기 속에서 난민들과 동지들이 한자리에 모여, 한옥커즈의 공동체성과 목적을 되새겼습니다.

30명이 넘는 참석자들은 단체의 창의적 옹호 활동, 심리사회적 지원, 그리고 커뮤니티 활동을 함께 돌아보는 시간을 가졌습니다. 공간은 축제의 기운으로 가득했습니다! 캄보디아와 에티오피아의 음식, 수제 레몬에이드, 그리고 카메룬 커피를 나누며 마음을 나눴습니다. 아래 '기고문'에 한옥커즈 회원 제레미가 이날 모임을 돌아보며 전하는 이야기를 담았습니다.

More than 30 attendees had the opportunity to reflect on and celebrate our creative advocacy, psycho-social support and community engagement activities over the past three years. Of course, the event was infected with festivity, as everyone shared a mix of Cambodian and Ethiopian foods, homemade lemonade, and tasty coffee from Cameroon. Below, Hanokers friend Jeremy shares his reflection from the event, in the Contributions section.

It was a great experience presenting the situation of Cameroon and Ambazonia to the Hanokers community. What made it even more special was that my son, Ethan, saw me speak publicly for the first time. He was a bit shy about being mentioned, but I explained the importance of sharing our stories to create awareness and change. In the end, he was happy to be part of the event, especially as the cameraman. Hanokers is a powerful platform for unheard voices, and I would gladly work with them again. I only wish there had been more time for Q&A, as the audience had many thoughtful questions.

한옥커즈 커뮤니티에게 카메룬과 암바조니아(Ambazonia) 지역의 상황을 전할 수 있어서 매우 뜻깊은 경험이었습니다. 특히 제 아들 에단이 처음으로 제가 공개적으로 발언하는 모습을 직접 볼 수 있어서 더욱 의미있었습니다. 자신의 이름이 언급되는 것을 처음엔 쑥스러워했지만, 우리의 이야기를 나누는 것이 얼마나 중요한지 설명해 주었습니다. 결국 에단도 이 행사의 일원이 된 것을 기뻐했고, 특히 카메라맨으로 활약하며 더욱 즐거워했습니다. 한옥커즈는 많은 이들의 목소리를 증폭시키는 강력한 플랫폼입니다. 기회가 된다면 계속 함께하고 싶습니다. 아쉬웠던 점이 있다면, 질문과 답변의 시간이 조금 더 있었으면 좋았을 것 같습니다. 참여자들의 질문이 정말 깊이 있고 다양했거든요.

I'm glad I found Hanokers on the meetup app, which led me to attend the talk by Chris Caspa quite randomly. This, followed by the annual gathering on the 29th, left a unique impression on me. Reading about refugees is one thing, talking to the folks, getting to know their stories, while having a unique blend of Cambodian-Ethiopian Cuisine (never thought these two would gel so well) was an altogether different, enlightening experience. Hope to attend more events in the future.

모임에 참석한 무자밀의 이야기 —

Meetup 앱에서 한옥커즈를 우연히 발견한 것이 정말 다행입니다. 그 인연으로 크리스 카스파의 강연에 반쯤은 우연히 참석하게 되었고, 이어서 29일 연례 모임까지 함께하게 되었습니다. 이 모든 경험이 제게 특별한 인상을 남겼습니다. 난민에 관한 글을 읽는 것과, 직접 사람들을 만나 그들의 이야기에 귀 기울이는 것은 전혀 다른 일이었습니다. 거기에 캄보디아와 에티오피아 음식이 어우러진 독특한 식사까지 — 이 두 나라의 맛이 이렇게 잘 어울릴 줄은 몰랐습니다 — 참으로 색다르고 풍요로운 경험이었습니다. 앞으로도 한옥커즈의 행사에 더 많이 참석하고 싶습니다.

     That day, I came to the gathering with Ishmael Mersham, a good friend. I was impressed by how well-organized the event was. And how well-spoken each of the speakers were. How respectful and thoughtful to the participants. Pointing out and bringing forth representatives from refugee communities who have been doing service to their members and the greater community of refugees throughout Korea. I understood that many of the people present had endured great hardship and loneliness, poverty and mistreatment through their days and months, even years of struggle for acceptance in a foreign country for a new start in life, seldom with their families, away from their countries of birth and loved ones left behind who they, someday, hope to reunite with. I met or observed several such people, and could feel their pain, but also their heroic efforts to make a difference in their lives and the lives of others around them.

     A strange thing happened to me the night before attending this meeting. In a dream, I entered a cave, plenty tall enough to stand in, with water at the bottom because it opened to the ocean.

     What happened magically was during the break of our meeting, I stood up, and one of the women organizers offered me a cup of water. Then she said, would you like to have a slice of lemon with it? And I said, of course. She dropped two slices into my cup. Then I told her the dream. For this indeed was a dream come true, and in the most delightful way.

     Our meeting room was like the cave in my dream. The cave is like a womb. It is a place where pregnancy can take place, like the birth of an idea. And where the idea can come to fruition. What I saw at your meeting was a fruitful exchange of ideas, camaraderie, friendship, and productive energy. I witnessed generosity and wisdom, along with the promise of a healthy organization, one performing worthy, beneficial purposes.

     그날, 저는 친한 친구 이스마엘 머샴과 함께 모임에 참석했습니다. 행사가 얼마나 잘 준비되어 있었는지, 각각의 연사들이 얼마나 진심 어린 말을 전했는지, 그리고 참석자들을 얼마나 따뜻하고 세심하게 배려했는지가 깊이 인상에 남았습니다. 한국 전역의 난민 커뮤니티에서 묵묵히 봉사해온 분들을 무대 앞으로 불러내어 그 존재를 빛내주는 모습도 감동적이었습니다.

     그 자리에 모인 많은 분들이 낯선 나라에서 새로운 삶을 시작하기 위해 수개월, 때로는 수년에 걸쳐 커다란 고난과 외로움, 가난과 부당한 대우를 견뎌왔다는 것을 느꼈습니다. 대부분 가족도 없이, 고향과 사랑하는 이들을 뒤로한 채, 언젠가는 다시 만날 수 있기를 바라며 살아가는 분들이었습니다. 그런 분들을 직접 만나고 바라보면서, 그 아픔이 고스란히 전해졌습니다. 하지만 동시에, 자신의 삶과 주변 사람들의 삶을 조금이라도 나아지게 하려는 그 용기 있는 노력도 느낄 수 있었습니다.

     이 모임에 참석하기 전날 밤, 묘한 일이 있었습니다. 꿈속에서 저는 어느 동굴로 들어갔습니다. 서 있을 수 있을 만큼 충분히 높았고, 바닥에는 바다로 이어지는 물이 고여 있었습니다.

     그런데 마법 같은 일이 일어났습니다. 모임 쉬는 시간에 자리에서 일어났을 때, 여성 운영진 한 분이 다가와 물 한 잔을 건네주셨습니다. 그리고는 레몬 한 조각 넣어드릴까요? 하고 물으셨습니다. 물론이죠, 하고 답하자 컵 안에 레몬 두 조각이 떨어졌습니다. 저는 그분께 꿈 이야기를 했습니다. 그 꿈이 현실이 된 것이었고, 그것도 가장 아름다운 방식으로.

     우리가 모인 공간은 꿈속의 동굴과 닮아 있었습니다. 동굴은 자궁과 같은 곳입니다. 잉태가 이루어지는 곳, 하나의 생각이 싹트고 자라나 결실을 맺는 곳. 그날 모임에서 제가 본 것이 바로 그것이었습니다. 생각들이 오가고, 동료애와 우정이 피어나고, 활기찬 에너지가 넘치는 자리. 그 안에서 저는 너그러움과 지혜를 목격했고, 가치 있고 의미 있는 일을 해나가는 건강한 단체의 가능성을 느꼈습니다.
